JHF in DC for my B day

Attended an event in DC in honor of John Hope Franklin. Always great to see this amazing person, any occasion. Kris and Jace were in town, so a little weird to pop out, and come back.

Ready for Intelligent Design?

Bob Richard gave the Ryerson lecture. He is the Morris Fishbein Professor in the History of Science and Medicine. The topic “The Narrative Structure of Moral Judgments in History: Evolution and Nazi Biology,” an examination of the work of the 19th-century German scholar Ernst Haeckel. Haeckel was widely regarded by historians as an intellectual force in Nazism because the theory of the races he developed had been interpreted to justify German superiority. Richards explored how historians use grammatical techniques to construct narratives, such as using different ideas of time and causal structure.

Kabuki Lady MacBeth

A special presentation of Kabuki Lady MacBeth at Chicago Shakes. It was just a little disturbing to have seen the same actress playing Lady MacBeth in The Scotch Play who very, very recently was playing Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.

NYC: All Over Again

A work trip to NYC--basically the rescheduling of all the work appointments I missed when I was sick for Christo in February. And they all worked out.

Joffrey Ballet

Can you believe it? Our first outing to the Joffrey. Shameful. Very strong company, and a good program. Theme was American Masterworks, featuring George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, and Antony Tudor.

Neil Harris, of U of Chicago's Department of History, gave a lecture at the Cliffdwellers on his new book on Chicago luxury apartments. Entertaining, and man, can he work the slide projector.
